How reliable are AI face ratings?

Explore AI face rating accuracy: landmark detection, repeatability, reference bias and photo variation. Learn what an experimental score can and cannot show.

Detection accuracy, repeatability and validity

AI face rating accuracy involves several questions that should be evaluated separately.

Can software locate facial features? A face-landmark model estimates visible points in a photo. Estimates may be affected by image quality, pose, occlusion and the model's training data.

Can those points be measured consistently? Fixed formulas can consistently transform the same coordinates into component scores. The estimated coordinates themselves can vary across devices, model versions and preprocessing.

Can the score tell how attractive people find you? This product has not been validated as a predictor of human attractiveness ratings. A repeatable calculation does not establish that it measures real-world attraction.

Where photo geometry can mislead

  • A two-dimensional image changes with perspective and camera distance.
  • The visible mesh boundary does not identify the anatomical hairline.
  • Front-facing landmarks cannot establish side-profile anatomy or bone structure.
  • Geometry alone does not measure skin health, personality, confidence or social appeal.
  • A geometric reference can favour some natural facial proportions over others.

The current test does not provide a clinical diagnosis, a global ranking, or a verified estimate of how a panel of people would rate you.

How to evaluate a result without overreading it

Check the input photo first, then the component definitions and the formula. A tool that explains its references is easier to assess than an unexplained rating, but transparency alone does not prove accuracy. This product has no published validation study or supported error percentage for predicting human preferences. We therefore do not advertise an accuracy rate, demographic fairness guarantee or confidence interval.

What MediaPipe supplies, and what this product adds

The detector uses Google's MediaPipe Face Landmarker. The detector and our scoring rules are separate: MediaPipe supplies estimated landmarks; this product supplies the reference values and component weights. See the official MediaPipe documentation for model capabilities. That documentation does not validate this product's beauty score.

What our checks establish

For geometry-2.0.0, the dated verification record reports results from synthetic landmark inputs. Identical coordinates return the same values. Scaling image dimensions without changing normalized points preserves the score; representing equivalent pixel geometry in a wider canvas also preserves it. Invalid, undersized and excessive-pose fixtures are rejected instead of scored.

These are software checks. They do not establish that repeated photographs produce identical landmarks. No real-person cross-camera study, representative demographic evaluation or human preference validation has been completed for this product. See the fixture and testing scope rather than interpreting passed tests as an attractiveness accuracy percentage.

What published research can tell us

Research helps distinguish measurement agreement from universal validity. Neither study below evaluates attractiveness-test.co, our fixed formula or our in-depth report.

Primary study

What was examined

Limit on applying it here

AI versus human focus-group ratings (2024)

Five rating websites and 24 resident raters evaluated 40 AI-generated, frontal, expressionless adult white female faces.

A narrow synthetic-image sample and different tools do not validate this product or generalize to all adults.

Human and machine aesthetic ratings (2025)

Face++ scores on SCUT-FBP5500 were compared with ratings by 60 volunteers, using correlation and agreement measures.

A relationship in that dataset is not a guarantee for another model, reference formula or individual portrait.

A correlation between ratings, agreement between raters and accuracy of a particular classifier are different measurements. None supplies an error bar for this website. Our references of equal visible thirds, five equal horizontal parts and 1.35 visible length-to-width are disclosed implementation choices, not research-derived universal ideals.

Is the paid AI-generated explanation more accurate?

It is more detailed, not a validated second opinion. AI receives derived measurements and generates explanatory text; the score and numerical table continue to come from the same formula as the free test. A fluent paragraph can still misinterpret a measurement. Check it against the scoring method and the illustrative report. Paying $9.90 does not establish scientific validity, a population rank or a forecast of another person's attraction.
